Sublime Thresholds Tarot Softcover Companion Guidebook - philosophical guidebook for an 88-card deck

Few tarot guidebooks trace their interpretive framework back to a graduate thesis. This one does. Nitasia Roland completed her MFA in Creative Writing between 2017 and 2019, and her thesis - 'The Endurance of the Sublime' - is the direct foundation of how every card in this system is read and understood.

The Latin word 'sublimis' means elevated or lofty, from 'sub' (up to) and 'limen' (threshold). As a philosophical concept, the sublime dates back to the 1st century AD, when the Greek theorist Longinus wrote a treatise on it that shaped Western literary and aesthetic thought for centuries, influencing Edmund Burke and Immanuel Kant among others. Roland applies this tradition to tarot: each of the 88 cards in the deck - 22 Major Arcana, 56 Minor Arcana, and 10 Oracle cards - receives a 'Sublime Code' identifying which variety of sublime experience the painting on that card represents.

What the guidebook contains

Each card receives a full-size image on one page and a complete divinatory interpretation on the facing page. The interpretations are written from an intuitive, animist, and poetically oriented perspective - not as a dry keyword list. Alongside each reading, Roland includes a Greek word that corresponds to the card's archetype and contextual notes on the art era from which the painting was drawn. The deck itself draws on paintings from the 17th century through the fin de siecle, selected from over 4,000 individually reviewed artworks.

Anyone already working with the Sublime Thresholds Tarot deck will find this guidebook the most thorough way to understand it as Roland intended. The philosophical layer - Sublime Codes, Greek concepts, art-historical context - is not aimed at someone learning tarot for the first time. It is a book for readers who already know the cards and want to engage with the full framework behind them.

The deck is sold separately. This guidebook contains a black and white interior with full-size card images throughout.

About the creator

Nitasia Roland created both the Sublime Thresholds Tarot deck and this companion guidebook. She studied Creative Writing at MFA level from 2017 to 2019, writing her thesis on the philosophical concept of the sublime. Her publishing imprint is Urania Press. This guidebook is a direct extension of that academic work, applied to card-by-card interpretation.

Is this suitable for beginners?
The interpretations are complete and self-contained, but references to Longinus, Edmund Burke, Immanuel Kant, and Roland's own academic thesis assume some existing familiarity with tarot. This is not an introduction to reading cards.
