Tahiti Tarot - 55 cards with Gauguin's South Seas paintings
This is not a tarot deck in the traditional sense. It is a collection of artworks, published as a card set. The 55 cards all show fragments from paintings Paul Gauguin made during his time in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands.
Each image is part of a larger work: women in purple or yellow clothing, landscapes with tropical trees, still lifes with fruit. The colours are strong and create sharp contrasts. That is typical of Gauguin's style from this period.
What you see on the cards
The focus is on portraits and scenes from daily life. Many cards show female figures, seated or resting. The backgrounds are flat and decorative, with warm shades of red, orange and yellow.
The cards measure 90 x 130 mm, slightly larger than playing cards. The cardstock is sturdy. The images are clearly printed. There is no guidebook, only the cards themselves.
How to use this deck
This deck works best as a source of inspiration or as a way to explore Gauguin's work. You can draw a card and look at it, or lay several cards side by side and look for connections in colour or form.
It is not a replacement for a classic tarot deck. There are 55 cards instead of 78, and they follow no fixed structure. Those who prefer an intuitive approach and are comfortable with free interpretation can work well with it.
Lay three cards side by side and look at the colours. Which tones recur? Which figures face each other, and which turn away?
About Paul Gauguin
Paul Gauguin was born in 1848 in Paris and died in 1903 on the Marquesas Islands. He began his career as a stockbroker but eventually chose painting. In 1891 he left for Tahiti, seeking a life far from European society.
His work from that period is characterised by bold colours, stylised forms and an emphasis on the daily life of the local population. Gauguin saw himself as a primitive, someone returning to simplicity. That vision is contested, but his technique and use of colour remained influential.
