Tarot de A.E. Waite Standard Blue Edition Portuguese - the classic Rider-Waite system
There are hundreds of tarot decks, but most build on this system. The Rider-Waite deck from 1909 is the reference point for modern tarot. This Portuguese edition by AGM Urania is a faithful reissue with all the original symbolism intact.
The cards show the illustrations by Pamela Colman Smith in soft, clear colours. Her visual language is direct: every card in the Minor Arcana shows a scene with people, not abstract symbols. That made this deck groundbreaking then and keeps it accessible today.
What you see on the cards
The symbolism is rich and recognizable. Smith worked with the esoteric knowledge of the Golden Dawn, but translated it into images anyone can read. A figure walking away, swords stuck in the ground, cups tipping over: the stories are immediate.
This edition has a matte finish and rounded corners. The format is 70 x 120 mm, comfortable to work with. The cards do not reflect under a lamp and do not stick together when you shuffle.
Who this works for
This deck is designed as a universal system. Almost every tarot book in the world describes these cards, regardless of the language of your edition. The guidebook is Portuguese, but the images are so widespread that you can find meanings anywhere.
For beginners this is a logical starting point. For advanced readers it remains a reference. Many people own multiple decks but return to this one when they want clarity on a question without distracting style choices.
Lay the cards on a dark surface. That brings out the colours of this edition more sharply and helps you notice details you might otherwise skip.
About Arthur Edward Waite and Pamela Colman Smith
Arthur Edward Waite was a British occultist and member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. He designed the system and wrote the texts. Pamela Colman Smith drew all 78 cards commissioned by publisher William Rider.
Smith received little recognition at the time and died in poverty, but her illustrations became the foundation for the most popular tarot system ever. Her work is now recognized worldwide.
