Tarot de Luz - Aitor Saraiba Deck - abstract tarot in bold colour blocks
Not every tarot deck tries to show you what to see. The Tarot de Luz by Aitor Saraiba drops the traditional scenes entirely and works with flat planes, silhouettes and sharp colour contrasts. The structure is classically tarot; the visual language is something else.
Published by Fournier, a Spanish printing house with over a century and a half of experience, the cards are printed on sturdy cardstock with a matte plastic coating. The format is compact: 64 by 114 mm, slightly narrower than many other tarot decks.
What you see on the cards
Red, yellow, blue and green dominate. Saraiba works with geometric shapes and hard colour transitions. Where a traditional tarot deck shows detailed figures and backgrounds, he chooses planes and silhouettes instead.
The Major Arcana are recognisable by their traditional numbering and names. The Minor Arcana follow the standard four-suit structure: wands, cups, swords and pentacles. The illustrations are not narrative, but they connect to the classical meanings of each card.
How the cards behave in use
The matte coating keeps fingerprints at bay and gives the cards a calm feel despite the vivid colours. The compact size and coating make them easy to handle. They shuffle smoothly and hold up well with daily use.
The guidebook is multilingual and contains short descriptions for each card, rooted in the classical tarot structure. No extensive spreads are included.
Pull a card and look at the colour and shape first. Only then ask yourself what the card traditionally means. The abstract imagery pushes your own associations to the surface.
