Tarot of A.E. Waite Premium Edition Pocket - the 1909 original in pocket size
The Rider-Waite deck is the foundation of almost everything modern tarot has become. The figurative imagery that Pamela Colman Smith drew in 1909, under the direction of Arthur Edward Waite, remains the reference point against which other decks are measured. This pocket edition reproduces that original as faithfully as possible.
The cards measure 57 x 89 mm. Colours are warm and clear, compositions unchanged from the first printing. The backs show the brown pebble design that came with the original 1909 edition. The card stock is firm, the finish matte.
What you see on the cards
All 78 cards are fully illustrated, from The Fool to the Ten of Pentacles. That was new in 1909: before then, the minor arcana carried no narrative scenes. Smith drew people in concrete situations, which makes the cards readable without extensive prior knowledge.
The imagery contains references to astrology, Kabbalah and Christian mysticism, but those layers are optional. You can read the cards from what you see, without knowing that symbolism. Card titles are in English.
The guidebook
The included guidebook runs 96 pages and is entirely in Portuguese. The text is by Rachel Pollack and Johannes Fiebig. Pollack wrote Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom, one of the most widely read tarot books ever published. Fiebig is a psychologist and tarot author. The guidebook covers card meanings, spreads and background on the Rider-Waite system.
This is not a quick reference sheet but a substantial text on the system. For readers who prefer a guidebook in a different language, AGM AGMüller publishes this deck in several language editions.
The pebble back on the reverse of the cards is a detail that many modern reprints leave out. If that historical accuracy matters to you, this edition delivers it.
About the creators
Arthur Edward Waite was a British occultist and member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. He designed the system and commissioned Pamela Colman Smith to illustrate all 78 cards. Smith was an artist and fellow member of the Order. Her work became the standard for generations of tarot illustrators.
Rachel Pollack wrote Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom, considered one of the most influential tarot books of the twentieth century. Johannes Fiebig is a psychologist with several tarot publications to his name. Together they wrote the guidebook for this edition.

Questions we often get
The guidebook is in Portuguese. Is this deck available with a guidebook in English?
Yes. AGM AGMüller publishes the Rider-Waite deck in several language editions. The cards themselves are in English across all editions. The language of the guidebook is what differs between them.
How does this pocket size compare to the standard edition?
These cards measure 57 x 89 mm, which is smaller than a standard tarot card. The illustrations and colours are otherwise unchanged. The compact size makes them easy to carry, though people with larger hands may find shuffling slightly more awkward.
