Most tarot decks work with drawings or paintings. This one uses photographs. Each of the 78 archetypes is represented by a gemstone, photographed against a black background. The result is clear: you see the natural form, colour and texture of the mineral.
Helmut G. Hofmann designed the deck as a bridge between tarot and crystal therapy. Each card shows one specific stone whose energetic properties match the meaning of the tarot archetype. The guidebook describes both sides: what the card means in a reading and what effect the stone has.
What you see on the cards
Each card image consists of a photograph of a raw or polished gemstone. The black background ensures that colours and details stand out sharply. No symbols, no figures, only the mineral itself.
At the bottom of each card is the name of the tarot card and the name of the stone. There is no other text on the cards. The focus lies entirely on the image of the crystal.
How the guidebook is structured
The 66-page English guidebook describes the tarot meaning and the properties of the gemstone for each card. The booklet also contains charts that link stones, colours and chakras.
The text is practical in tone. You get concrete information on how to use the stone alongside the card, for example by carrying it or placing it during a reading.
Draw a card, find the corresponding stone and place it where you lay the card. The physical presence of the mineral can strengthen the reading.
Who this deck works for
This deck is designed for people who already work with crystals or are curious about them. The combination of tarot and gemstone therapy assumes interest in both. If you only want to read tarot without attention to minerals, this deck offers less support than a classically illustrated deck.
For beginners in tarot, the absence of figurative images can be a threshold. There is no visual story on the cards, only the stone itself. The guidebook partly compensates for this with clear descriptions.

Do I need to own the gemstones themselves to work with this deck?
No, that is not required. The guidebook describes the effect of each stone, and the photo on the card is clear enough to meditate with. Having the physical stone does add something, though.
Are the tarot meanings traditional or divergent?
The meanings align with the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition. Hofmann adds the energetic properties of the gemstone, but does not change the core of the archetype.
