Tezuka Tarot - manga panels form the arcana
Few creators have shaped a medium as thoroughly as Osamu Tezuka shaped manga. His characters are recognizable enough to carry a tarot deck without the cards losing their symbolic function.
This deck uses panels from works such as Astro Boy, Black Jack, Phoenix, Buddha and Dororo. The images are original material, not reinterpretations. Each panel stands for an arcanum from the Rider-Waite system.
What you see on the cards
The illustrations are black-and-white panels from Tezuka's stories, selected to carry the tarot symbolism. The Fool shows a character in motion, the Tower a moment of collapse, the Star a vision. The choice is based on narrative theme, not outward resemblance.
The minor arcana follow the same principle. Each card carries a scene that refers to the traditional meaning of wands, cups, swords or pentacles. The visual language remains Tezuka's own style: expressive faces, dynamic lines, sparse backgrounds.
The cards contain no text. The 128-page guidebook explains for each card which character or story is depicted, and how that connects to the tarot meaning.
Who this works for
This deck is published for collectors and people familiar with Tezuka's work. The guidebook is written by Ms. Imaizumi of Tezuka Productions and assumes you have an interest in the background stories.
As a tarot deck it functions within the Rider-Waite system. The symbolism is not Japanese or Eastern, but follows the Western tradition. What is different is the visual language.
Lay the cards next to a classic Rider-Waite deck and see how the same arcana are translated differently. It deepens your understanding of both systems.
About Osamu Tezuka
