The Archeon Tarot Deck - photography and collage in mythological setting
Not every tarot deck looks like a tarot deck. The Archeon Tarot by Timothy Lantz uses digital collage and photography to create images that resist easy placement. The atmosphere is dreamlike and melancholic, with strong emphasis on contrasts between light and dark.
Lantz builds his cards from photographed elements that he combines digitally. The result feels more like art photography than classic illustration. Mythological stories form the starting point, but he translates them into a contemporary, often somewhat dark visual language.
What you see on the cards
The Major Arcana show fragmented figures in misty landscapes. Faces are sometimes blurred, bodies sometimes partially hidden. Colours range from deep blue and grey to gold and soft pink.
The Minor Arcana follow the same principle. Each card contains layered images that do not reveal themselves at a glance. Details appear only with longer study: a hidden symbol, a shadow in the background, a contrast in texture.
The cards measure 70 x 120 mm, standard tarot size. The cardstock is sturdy with a smooth finish. Shuffling is easy. The total weight of the deck is 320 grams.
How this deck behaves
This is not a deck you read quickly. The images ask for time. They work intuitively but do not always give immediate direction. That openness is precisely what makes it suitable for people who like to make their own connections.
The deck comes with a spread sheet. The guidebook is brief and describes the cards without much explanation. Lantz assumes you interpret the images yourself.
Draw a card and look only at the colours and composition first. Read the meaning afterwards. Often the atmosphere says more than the description.
About Timothy Lantz
Timothy Lantz is an American graphic artist and illustrator with a background in art education and communication. Besides the Archeon Tarot, he created illustrations for DC Comics and Penguin Books.
His style is characterised by mixing photography with digital work. He deliberately seeks contrasts: romance versus tragedy, beauty versus decay. You see that in every detail of this deck.

Questions we often get
Does this deck work if you are new to tarot?
That depends on how you read. If you like working intuitively and letting images affect you, this deck can be a good fit. If you prefer clear symbols and straightforward meanings, a classic Rider-Waite deck is probably more practical.
How extensive is the guidebook?
The guidebook is brief. Each card gets a short description, but there is no extensive explanation of tarot tradition or symbolism. The spread sheet is useful if you want to start reading quickly.
