Border zones are places where things clash, merge or avoid each other. Where one landscape turns into another. Where cultures meet. The Borderlands Tarot takes the physical and symbolic border region between the US and Mexico as the starting point for a fully hand-painted tarot deck.
It is a collaboration between Enid Baxter Ryce, professor of art and environmental studies, and Luis Cámara, filmmaker and screenwriter from Mexico City. All cards are fully bilingual: English and Spanish appear side by side on every card.
The illustrations show the ecology of the border region. Cacti, desert landscapes, migrating animals, native plants. The imagery is earthy and direct, with hand-painted textures that emphasize the raw character of the landscape.
The symbolism combines traditional tarot archetypes with elements from the culture and nature of the region. Every card carries that layering: you can read it as classic tarot, but also as a story about identity, migration and the tension between human borders and natural processes.
The colours are warm and dusty. Lots of ochre, brown, green and red. It feels dry, rough and alive at the same time.
The structure is fully traditional: 78 cards, divided into major and minor arcana. The numbering and sequence do not deviate from the Rider-Waite-Smith system. What changes is the imagery and cultural context.
Where a classic deck often uses European symbolism, this deck shows how the same archetypes function in a different landscape, with different stories, different animals, different plants. That makes the deck accessible for those already working with tarot, but gives it its own face.
The guidebook describes per card which plant or animal you see and why it was chosen. That deepens the reading without having to memorize everything.
This deck is designed for anyone working with tarot who wants to broaden the imagery. The bilingual setup makes it particularly suitable for Spanish-speaking readers, but also for those who recognize or want to learn the symbolism of the border region.
The guidebook is extensive: 208 pages with card descriptions, backgrounds and reflections. That helps in understanding the specific choices in the imagery, without having to guess what a particular animal or landscape means.
Enid Baxter Ryce teaches art and environmental studies and has exhibited work at institutions including the Getty Museum. Her focus lies on the relationship between ecology, culture and image-making.
Luis Cámara is a screenwriter and filmmaker. His work focuses on identity, migration and the stories that emerge in borderlands. For this deck he drew and painted all cards by hand.
Do I need to speak Spanish to use this deck?
No. All text appears in both English and Spanish on the cards and in the guidebook. You can choose which language you read.
Does the symbolism differ strongly from classic tarot?
The structure and archetypes are classic. What changes is the imagery: instead of European symbolism you see elements from the ecology and culture of the border region between the US and Mexico.
