The Gentle Tarot Seed Edition - revised deck with Black Core and foiled edges
The Gentle Tarot has been around for a while, but the Seed Edition is not a reprint. Mari Hulick revisited many of the original illustrations, refined them, and redrew them. She described her first edition as a sketch: the Seed Edition is what the deck always wanted to become.
The difference shows. Every card now has a quiet white border, giving the artwork and colours room to breathe. Several traditional title names have also changed. Justice is now Choices, Hierophant is now Confluence, Judgement is now Emergence. Not a philosophical overhaul, but a deliberate move toward more accessible language.
What comes in this set
This is the Kickstarter Black Core Edition, not the standard Traditional Make and Finish. The card stock is 330 gsm German Black Core paper with a soft matte finish, which makes the cards smooth to shuffle. The edges are finished with periwinkle foil. The box closes with a side magnet.
The deck contains 83 cards in total: the 78 traditional tarot cards, two additional Major Arcana cards (card XXII The Unseen and card XXIII Perspective/Integration, one of which is horizontal), and three altar cards featuring illustrations from My Friend Fire with handwritten affirmations. A compact, full-colour English-language booklet covering meanings and intentions is included with the deck.
The set also includes the second edition of the full Gentle Tarot Guidebook, a cotton canvas deck pouch, and a reading cloth. The cloth comes in First Edition Maroon or black; note your preference in the order comments at checkout. Allocation depends on available stock.
The imagery behind this deck
The Gentle Tarot is built around a connection with nature, flora, and fauna. Mari Hulick translates personal stories into images that feel soft without avoiding difficult emotions. That puts this deck somewhere between the starkly dark and the relentlessly bright, and it holds that ground deliberately.
The soft colour palette and careful attention to material and texture are not decorative choices. They are part of how the deck functions: the physical experience of holding and shuffling the cards belongs to the content.
The three altar cards are not standard tarot cards. They are designed as a supplement to a reading spread or as a standalone focus point, with handwritten affirmations that stand apart from the traditional card meanings.
About Mari in the Sky
Mari in the Sky is the creative name of artist and illustrator Mari Hulick. Her work brings together illustration, nature, and intuitive self-reflection in tarot and oracle cards. Flora, fauna, and folklore run through everything she makes.
Mari publishes her decks independently and through Kickstarter projects, which means she keeps full creative control over everything from the illustrations to the choice of paper and the finish on the edges.

Questions we often get
What is the difference between the Seed Edition and the earlier version of the Gentle Tarot?
The Seed Edition is a revised version in which Mari redrew and refined many of the original illustrations. All cards now have white borders, and several title names have been replaced with softer alternatives. This is a substantial reworking of the original deck, not a minor update.
Can I choose the colour of the reading cloth?
You can note a preference in the order comments at checkout: First Edition Maroon or black. Allocation is based on available stock, so a specific colour cannot be guaranteed.
