The Mystic Palette Sepia Matte - monochrome tarot for contemplation
Colour directs the eye. Without colour, form remains. This sepia edition of the Mystic Palette Tarot removes saturation and lets composition speak.
Ciro Marchetti originally drew this deck digitally, with rich colours and baroque ornamentation. The sepia version shows the same scenes, but translated into a monochrome palette of warm brown, beige and cream. What remains are lines, shadows and light.
What you see on the cards
The imagery is complex. Architectural elements, classical ornaments, figures in layered robes. Marchetti works with compositions that are full, but the absence of colour gives each element more rest.
The sepia tones give the cards a nostalgic quality, as if you are looking at old photographs. That fits the symbolism: archetypes are not new, they are already old before you encounter them.
The cards follow the Rider-Waite-Smith structure. All scenes are recognisable if you know that tradition, but Marchetti translates them in his own style. More detail, more drama, more emphasis on light and shadow.
How the matte finish works
The cards have a matte finish. That means no reflections from lamps or sunlight. Practical if you photograph spreads or if you work under artificial light.
The cardstock is 330 grams, sturdy enough not to bend when shuffling. The cards feel soft, not slick. They glide smoothly over each other.
Precisely because of the muted colours, contrasts stand out. Notice where the light falls and where shadow begins. Marchetti uses that as a steering device.
Who this deck works for
This is not an entry-level deck if you have never seen tarot cards before. The images are rich and ask for time. But if you already know the basic structure of tarot, the sepia version offers a different way of looking.
Many people use this edition for shadow work or questions about the past. The muted tones match that pace. This is not a deck for quick answers.
About Ciro Marchetti
Ciro Marchetti is a digital illustrator who has designed multiple tarot decks, including the Gilded Tarot and the Legacy of the Divine Tarot. His work is characterised by digital techniques, baroque influences and a preference for complex compositions.
The Mystic Palette Tarot is self-published by him, which means all creative decisions rest with him. The sepia edition is an example of that: a conscious choice to remove colour and centre form.
