The Nereid Oracle - 97 sea nymphs from Greek mythology
Ten years of illustration work for a single deck. That is not a marketing claim. Stevyn Llewellyn says it himself, and the result shows it. The Nereid Oracle contains 97 cards dedicated to the Nereids, the sea nymphs of Greek mythology. It is a deck with a clear visual language and a mythological foundation that goes well beyond surface decoration.
The Nereids are granddaughters of the titan Oceanus and the goddess Tethys, daughters of Doris and Nereus, the Wise Old Man of the Sea. In Greek legend they are singing women, weavers swimming among the dolphins, crowned in red coral, protectors of sailors and ocean travelers. That is the world this deck inhabits.
What you see on the cards
The illustrations are built around sinuous, flowing lines and a consistent palette of deep sapphire blue. The figures are delicately rendered, with long hair that flows into the waves around them. Llewellyn describes deliberately working with negative space, which gives the images a quality of stillness despite all the movement they depict.
Each card carries the name of an individual Nereid, a keyword, and a short phrase or declaration. Keto, Nereid of sea monsters, stands for fear and the confrontation of hidden dangers. Kymothoe, Nereid of the swift waves, stands for energy and moving with the current rather than against it. All 97 cards have this kind of specific mythological identity.
What the guidebook covers
The guidebook runs to 57 pages and describes the divinatory meaning of each card. The texts are written in the voice of the nymphs themselves: advisory, at times cautionary, at times encouraging. The emphasis is on self-reflection, growth, and trusting one's intuition.
The guidebook is compact and sized to sit alongside the cards. It does not include full spreads or layout instructions; the focus is on individual card descriptions.
Water as a central theme
The sea in this deck is not a backdrop. It is the subject. Water here stands for what is changeable, unpredictable, and at the same time deeply felt. The cards draw a direct line between the nature of the waves and the inner state of the person consulting the deck.
Draw a card when a question touches on emotion or intuition. The Nereids rarely deal in certainties, but they always offer direction.
About Stevyn Llewellyn
Stevyn Llewellyn created The Nereid Oracle as both illustrator and originator of the concept. He spent a decade developing the deck alongside a visual style he describes as consistent in color, line, and interplay with negative space. The mythological depth of the deck is his own choice, not a publisher's brief.
