The Phoenix Cards - 44 archetypes with light and shadow sides
Many oracle decks offer keywords and brief meanings. The Phoenix Cards take a different route. Each card represents an archetype from the collective unconscious, and receives a double description in the accompanying 192-page book: the light side and the shadow side.
The deck is created by Anne Vonjahr, a German coach and author who focuses on psychological archetypes and inner work. Her approach draws from Jungian psychology and works with universal patterns present in all people.
What you see on the cards
The cards are colorful and symbolic. Each archetype receives a visual form that is recognizable without becoming literal. The imagery focuses on emotional and psychological patterns, not concrete situations.
In the book, each archetype is explored from two angles. The light side describes the positive qualities and strengths. The shadow side names what happens when this archetype is suppressed or remains unconscious. That is not a side note: it is precisely this shadow aspect that makes this deck interesting for self-inquiry.
Who this deck works for
This is not a beginner deck. The cards ask for knowledge of or interest in psychology, and the willingness to look further than a daily affirmation. If you want to work with archetypes, do shadow work, or use cards in coaching or therapy, you will find material here that goes beyond most oracle decks.
The book is extensive enough to work with without prior knowledge, but the tone is considered. No quick lists, but descriptions you must translate to your own situation.
Draw a card and read only the shadow side first. See if you recognize the pattern in your own behavior before turning to the light side.

Questions we often get
Do I need to know Jungian psychology to use this deck?
No, but an interest in it helps. The book explains the basic principles of archetypes, but assumes you are open to psychological self-inquiry.
How does this deck differ from a tarot deck?
Tarot works with a fixed structure of 78 cards and a fixed symbolic system. The Phoenix Cards focus purely on archetypes, without that structure. This makes them more flexible, but also less suitable if you want to learn traditional tarot meanings.
