Some oracle decks focus on light and love. This one asks for something harder: that you also see your shadow. Lynn V. Andrews designed 45 cards that force you to look at what you would rather ignore.
Andrews worked for more than thirty years with shamanic healers across four continents. Her best-known work is the New York Times bestseller series Medicine Woman. That story of personal transformation forms the foundation for this deck.
The illustrations are mystical and abstract. No classical symbols or recognizable archetypes, but images that force you to interpret for yourself. That fits with Andrews' approach: no fixed answers, but universal revelations that you must apply yourself.
The cardstock is sturdy. The cards are large, 127 x 171 mm, which makes them heavy in the hand. Shuffling takes more effort, but the space makes the images stronger during readings.
This is not a deck for a quick daily card. The focus lies on shadow work: recognizing limitations, fears and patterns that hold you back. Andrews describes this as finding the primal source of what keeps you small, and transforming it into power.
The accompanying guidebook contains affirmations and meditations for each card. Not brief keywords, but text blocks that invite you to sit longer with one card. This requires time and honesty.
Draw a card in the morning and place it somewhere visible. Let the image work on you throughout the day without immediately searching for meaning.
This deck is accessible to beginners, but not gentle. The texts are clear and the guidebook provides plenty of context. At the same time, the work requires a willingness to look at yourself in a way that is not always comfortable.
Those seeking confirmation or reassuring messages will find something different here. Andrews states that healing begins with accepting the full balance between light and shadow. That is the core of any work with this deck.
Lynn V. Andrews was an author and teacher in the field of shamanic wisdom. Her work includes 21 books and several card sets. She died in 2023, but her legacy continues to be read and used worldwide.
Her strength lay in translating indigenous wisdom into a form accessible to a modern audience, without losing the depth.
How large are the cards compared to a standard tarot deck?
The cards are 127 x 171 mm, considerably larger than a standard Rider-Waite deck (70 x 120 mm). They feel heavier in the hand and require more space during readings.
Does the guidebook contain fixed meanings?
No. The guidebook contains affirmations, meditations and context for each card, but no glossary with brief meanings. The intention is that you interpret yourself based on the imagery and your own experience.
