Weavers' Oracle (German edition) - 52 female archetypes from the landscape of Dartmoor

Some decks emerge in a weekend. This one took thirty years. Carolyn Hillyer painted, wrote, refined, and eventually brought together 52 cards in which female archetypes appear as weavers: figures who spin yarn, make braids, and weave cloth.

Each card is connected to a specific landscape in and around Dartmoor, the rugged area in southwest England where Hillyer lives and works. The imagery is direct, sometimes raw, and shows faces and symbols that reach back to old myths without layering a modern interpretation over them.

How this deck is structured

The 52 cards are divided across three categories: Yarn, Braid and Cloth. Yarn stands for the beginning of a process, the first threads you take in hand. Braid is the phase in which you give material form, strands woven together. Cloth is what is complete, what has found its function.

Each weaver carries a name and a story. The guidebook describes for each card which path this weaver walks, which quality she embodies, and how you can read her presence in a reading. The texts are not brief. They ask to be read multiple times.

The cards are printed on heavy art paper with a silk finish. The format is 148 x 105 mm, slightly larger than standard playing cards. The wire-bound guidebook stays flat when you open it, which is practical during a reading.

Who this works for

This deck is designed for people who have experience with oracle cards and are not easily put off by texts that go deeper. The symbolism is not universal. It comes directly from the work and landscape of Hillyer herself.

If you are looking for a deck with clear keywords and straightforward interpretations, this is not the right choice. The strength lies precisely in the complexity and in the space the cards leave for your own associations.

Draw a card and read the description aloud. The texts are written to be spoken, not just read.

About Carolyn Hillyer

Carolyn Hillyer is an artist, musician and writer. She lives in Dartmoor, an area that runs through all her work. Her focus lies on the connection between female archetypes, landscape and ancient traditions.

Hillyer works slowly. The Weavers' Oracle is the result of decades of painting and writing, and that shows in the depth of the material.

Questions we often get

Why are the cards in English and the guidebook in German?
The cards contain only names and symbols, no extensive texts. The interpretations are in the guidebook, which in this edition is translated into German. You do not need English to work with the deck.

What is the advantage of a wire-bound guidebook?
The ring binding ensures that the book stays open on the page you need. You do not have to press it flat or hold it down, which is helpful during a reading.
