Tarot of the Witches - film tarot with dreamlike imagery
Some tarot decks are born in the studio. This deck was born on the big screen. Tarot of the Witches appeared in 1974 in The Man with the Golden Gun, the James Bond film in which a fortune teller uses these cards to predict a future. The deck was later printed by U.S. Games Systems and has been available as a standalone tarot ever since.
What you see is surrealism: floating objects without explanation, alienating perspectives, figures that hover or drown in their surroundings. The colours are rich and saturated, with deep purples, dark blues and gold. This is not a subtle deck.
What is on the cards
The structure is classic. 78 cards, divided into Major and Minor Arcana, following the system you know from the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition. All familiar archetypes are present, but redrawn from a dream world. Swords float, pentacles hang in the air, wands stand crooked without falling over.
Every card is layered. You discover details with each use. A face in the background, a shadow that does not match, an object out of place. The illustrations invite intuitive reading, because the images set your thoughts in motion before you pick up a guidebook.
How you work with it
This deck is compatible with any tarot book or course based on the Rider-Waite-Smith layout. The cards are printed on sturdy cardstock with a smooth finish and rounded corners, which makes shuffling pleasant. The format is standard, so they fit in most pouches or boxes.
The rich details make it suitable for daily card draws, but also for simply looking at without asking a question. The images work as a meditation tool. Lay a card in front of you and observe what your eye catches first.
Draw a card and write down what you see first, before looking up the meaning. The details that stand out first often already tell you what you need in that moment.
