African Tarot Deck - Rider-Waite symbolism with South African visual language
Not every deck opts for subtle transitions. This one uses colour fully. Marina Romito reimagined the Rider-Waite images with patterns, outlines and colour use that refer directly to indigenous South African art forms.
The result feels playful, yet it does touch the classic meanings. The Rider-Waite structure remains intact, but the visual language gets a different emphasis: brighter, more direct, with more focus on form than on detail.
What you see on the cards
Thick black outlines define every figure and object. Colours are intense: orange, yellow, red, blue. Backgrounds often stay flat, so the symbolism takes centre stage. That makes the cards clear to read.
The back shows a turtle, a symbol from Shagaan culture that stands for justice that comes slowly, but always arrives. It is one of the few elements that point directly to a specific cultural source.
How this deck relates to Rider-Waite
The sequence, numbering and basic structure match Rider-Waite. The figures stand in the same poses, the attributes return. That means you can read this deck without difficulty if you already know a classic RWS deck.
The difference lies in the atmosphere. Where Rider-Waite is often restrained, this deck chooses exuberance. That works well for intuitive reading: the images immediately evoke a feeling.
The compact format (57 x 76 mm) makes this deck easy to take with you. It fits in a coat pocket, shuffles smoothly and remains clearly readable thanks to the strong contrasts.

Questions we often get
Can I use this deck if I only know Rider-Waite?
Yes. The structure, meanings and scenes match Rider-Waite. The styling is different, the symbolism is not.
Is this smaller format comfortable to work with?
It depends on your preference. The deck shuffles smoothly, sits well in your hand and remains clearly readable. For large spreads it is more compact, which saves space.
