Essential Tarot - minimalism that lets symbolism speak

Some decks flood you with detail. This one does the opposite. Pablo Montt took classic tarot symbolism and stripped away everything that is not strictly necessary.

What remains are 78 cards with clean, almost graphic icons in black and white. A star is a star. A key is a key. No landscapes, no faces, no colours pushing you in a direction. The form must speak for itself.

What you see on the cards

Each card shows one central symbol, sometimes two. The style is flat and geometric, with high contrast between figure and ground. It looks like pictograms, but with the weight of a tarot arcana.

The Major Arcana are recognisable: The Tower shows a tower, The Star a star. In the Minor Arcana you mostly see the suit element itself, with the number that belongs to the card. A Seven of Swords shows seven swords, not a figure sneaking away with them in the night.

That bareness is deliberate. Montt wants you to fill in what the card means in that moment, without a facial expression or colour steering you before you have had a chance to feel.

How you work with it

This deck asks something of you. You cannot fall back on the memory of a Rider-Waite scene. You have to read the symbol itself and sense what it does in the context of your question.

That makes it suitable both for beginners who want to learn the basic structure of tarot without visual overload, and for advanced readers who want to retrain their intuition outside the well-worn paths of RWS derivatives.
