Ferenc Pinter Tarot - paintings from a broader collection
Not every tarot deck begins as tarot. This one is compiled from the work of Ferenc Pinter, a Hungarian-Italian artist best known for his book covers. The cards show surrealist paintings that were originally created outside of tarot, now bundled into a complete set of 78 cards.
Published by Lo Scarabeo. Compiled by Pietro Alligo and Charles Harrington, who translated Pinter's visual language into the structure of the Major and Minor Arcana.
What you see on the cards
The cards are borderless. Every image fills the entire surface. The style moves between Renaissance elements and modern surrealism: figures float, backgrounds blend, colours contrast sharply.
The Minor Arcana are not illustrated scenes in the traditional sense. They are paintings in which the symbols sometimes recede into the background. That asks for attention to detail. Sometimes the message is not in the central figure, but in the colour of the sky or the shape of a shadow.
The images are expressive, sometimes dark, sometimes poetic. Many contrasts. Light and shadow alternate. The atmosphere is mysterious, not inviting in a conventional way.
Who this deck works for
This is not a beginner deck. The cards ask for experience with tarot and for letting go of fixed meanings. You need to be willing to associate, to find meaning in colour and composition rather than in recognisable symbols.
The deck lends itself to introspection and shadow work. The images give little to hold on to, and that is precisely its strength. If you are used to clear scenes and predictable symbolism, this deck will take effort.
Take time to look at the backgrounds. With Pinter, the message often sits not in the central figure, but in the colours and the space around it.
About Ferenc Pinter and the compilers
Ferenc Pinter (1931-2008) was a celebrated artist. His book covers, saturated with atmosphere and symbolism, made him well known. This deck brings his work together in a tarot context, though he did not design the cards for that purpose himself.
Pietro Alligo and Charles Harrington compiled the set. Harrington wrote the text in the multilingual guidebook, translating Pinter's visual language into usable interpretations.

Questions we often get
Is this deck suitable for beginners?
No. The cards ask for experience with tarot and for the ability to associate freely. Beginners often lack the structure needed to find meaning in these images.
How does this deck differ from a classic Rider-Waite-Smith deck?
The Minor Arcana do not contain recognisable tarot scenes. They are paintings from Pinter's broader work, in which the symbols are sometimes barely visible. That makes the deck visually rich, but harder to read.
