Joie de Vivre Tarot - fairy-tale imagery with colour and detail
Some tarot decks are spare and symbolic. This deck is the opposite. Paulina Fae's cards are packed with characters, tiny creatures, flowers, patterns and colour. A lot of colour.
The name is French for 'joy of life', and you see that reflected in how the cards are drawn. Cheerful, busy, imaginative. The style recalls Alice in Wonderland: a world where everything is just a little different from what you expect.
What you see on the cards
Each card has a different character as its main figure. Not standard Rider-Waite-style scenes, but original compositions with their own stories. The figures are softly drawn, often with large eyes and rounded shapes.
The backgrounds are richly filled in. Flowers, stars, fish, trees, clouds. Everything Paulina Fae could think of to make the card fuller is on it. That makes the imagery busy, but also lively.
The colours are bright and warm. Lots of pink, purple, yellow, green. Dark tones are rare. That gives the deck a soft feeling.
How this deck behaves in use
This is not a deck for quick, short readings. The cards ask for time. You need to look at the details, at the small creatures in the corners, at the way a figure looks at you or looks away.
The matte finish means the cards shuffle smoothly. The size of 70 x 120 mm is standard and sits comfortably in the hand. The cardstock is sturdy enough to withstand regular use.
The accompanying guidebook is in English and gives a short description for each card. No in-depth essays, but enough to grasp the basic idea of each card.
Draw a card and lay it in front of you. Look for three minutes without consulting anything. Which detail catches your eye first? That is often the starting point of the message.

Questions we often get
Does this deck follow the Rider-Waite structure?
Yes, it has the same 78 cards and the same division into major and minor arcana. However, the imagery is entirely original and departs strongly from classic RWS symbolism.
Is this deck suitable for beginners?
That depends on what you are looking for. The cards are intuitive because of the expressive figures, but the busyness of the images can be overwhelming if you are just starting out. The guidebook does help you understand the basics.
