Keymaster Tarot - French Edition - Renaissance aesthetics with occult symbols
Some tarot decks look classical. This one looks classical and feels new at the same time. Lorenzo Gaggiotti draws his inspiration from Renaissance art and translates it into a contemporary illustration style that takes its own direction.
The result is a deck in which archetypes remain recognizable but are presented differently. Dark backgrounds, plenty of gold, figures that look straight at you. The composition recalls old manuscripts, but the lines are sharp and modern.
What you see on the cards
Every design is full of symbolism. Keys, stars, animals, geometric shapes. Gaggiotti works in layers: a first glance gives you the main figure, a second look reveals details that deepen the meaning.
The colours are muted. Lots of black, dark green, gold and burgundy. That makes the whole thing quiet, almost meditative. The style is not playful. This is a deck that radiates seriousness.
The images follow the Rider-Waite-Smith structure, but Gaggiotti takes freedom in the execution. Those who know the basic meanings will recognize the cards immediately. Those who do not can get lost in the imagery.
How it feels in use
The cards are printed on thick cardstock with a matte lamination. This prevents glare during readings and provides grip during shuffling. The size is 70 x 120 mm, slightly larger than standard playing cards.
The luxury box has a magnetic closure and provides space for both the cards and the guidebook. That guidebook runs to 160 pages and is entirely in French. In addition to card meanings, it contains spreads and background information on the symbols.
If you do not read French but have experience with tarot, you can use this deck intuitively. The images are rich enough to work without text.
Who this deck works for
This is not a beginner deck for those completely new to tarot who do not speak French. The guidebook does provide instructions, but they are not in Dutch or English.
For those who already read cards and are looking for an artistically accomplished deck, this offers a solid choice. The style suits deeper psychological work, shadow work or meditation.
Collectors of artistic decks appreciate the production quality and the distinctiveness of the visual language. This is not yet another Rider-Waite clone.

Questions we often get
Can I use this deck if I do not speak French?
Yes, if you already know the basic meanings of tarot. The images are based on the Rider-Waite system and also work intuitively. The guidebook is entirely in French, so for in-depth explanation you will need a translation or other sources.
How does this deck differ from a standard Rider-Waite?
The structure and archetypes are comparable, but the artistic execution is completely different. Gaggiotti opts for a dark, Renaissance-inspired style with many occult symbols. This makes it visually much richer and more complex than a classic RWS.
