Lydia Jacob Story - art cards for free association
This is not an oracle with fixed rules. It is a set of 55 surrealist images you can use for storytelling, conversation or creativity. Raymond E. Waydelich combines painting with collage, found objects and mysterious text fragments.
The cards are published by OH Publishing and come in a sturdy black box with gold lettering. The format (89 x 129 mm) is compact enough to carry with you, sturdy enough for daily use.
What you see on the cards
Animals, people and objects in unexpected combinations. A horse wearing a hat. A woman with a bird's head. Texts in handwriting or print that add context or seem randomly placed.
The style is layered and dreamlike. Some cards have an archaeological atmosphere, as if you are looking at excavated treasures. Others are more playful, almost childlike. The use of colour shifts from soft to bright, from naturalistic to surrealist.
There are short text fragments in German on some cards, but the focus lies on what you see. The images speak for themselves.
Who this works for
This set is popular with therapists, teachers and writers. The cards lend themselves to storytelling, improvisation and free association. Draw three cards and write a story. Lay one down and ask a group what they see.
Because there are no fixed meanings, you can use the cards however you like. That makes them accessible for beginners and interesting for anyone who already works with visual material.
Draw three cards blindly and write a short story in which all three images come together. It breaks through writer's block faster than you think.

Questions we often get
How do these cards differ from a traditional tarot deck?
A tarot deck has a fixed structure of 78 cards with specific symbols and meanings. This set contains 55 cards without fixed rules. You use them purely intuitively, for free association and creative expression.
Are the cards sturdy enough for daily use?
Yes. They are printed on thick art cardstock and hold up well to intensive use. Even in group sessions or therapeutic work they remain in good condition.
