Marseille Tarot Deck geel Grimaud DE/ES - compact reissue in the Grimaud tradition
The Tarot de Marseille is not a single deck but a whole family of editions. This yellow version from Grimaud follows the imagery that Paul Marteau recorded in the twentieth century. Smaller than most modern decks, with a colour palette that is instantly recognisable.
The cards are printed on sturdy cardstock and published in a bilingual edition: German and Spanish. No guidebook, no additional explanation. The deck itself is the source.
What you see on the cards
The Major Arcana show figurative scenes with clear outlines and flat colours. Yellow, red and blue dominate. The figures look left or right, often towards the card beside them in a spread.
The Minor Arcana are schematic: wands, cups, swords and pentacles in geometric patterns. No narrative scenes as in the Rider-Waite system. Only the Court cards show human figures.
The format is compact: 60 x 110 mm. This makes the deck easy to shuffle and convenient for tables with limited space.
How you work with it
The Marseille system calls for active interpretation. Because the Minor Arcana show no scenes, you work with numbers, colours and directions. The figures on the Major Arcana often point towards the card that holds the cause or the solution.
This deck is designed for anyone who wants to understand the foundation of the European tarot tradition. No modern language, no psychological layer that is pre-digested. Only the symbols and what you see in them yourself.
When laying out the cards, pay attention to the direction the figures in the Major Arcana are facing. They often point towards the card that gives the answer.
About Paul Marteau and Grimaud
Paul Marteau was a French esotericist who revitalised the Marseille tradition in the twentieth century. He worked for Grimaud, one of the oldest card manufacturers in France, and developed a systematic way to record the historical imagery.
Grimaud is known for colour accuracy and respect for the original designs. This yellow edition follows that line.

Questions we often get
Does this deck come with a guidebook?
No. This is a card deck without accompanying text. The Marseille tradition assumes you learn to interpret the symbols yourself or consult a separate book.
How does this deck differ from a Rider-Waite tarot?
The Minor Arcana in the Marseille system show no narrative scenes, only geometric patterns of the symbols. The Major Arcana have a different order and sometimes different names. The imagery is historical, not psychological.
