Product information

Mindscapes Tarot by John A. Rice – oil pastel landscapes as tarot worlds

You’re looking at a forest edge opening up, a sea shifting color, a mountain range turning quiet in snowlight, and a city glowing as if you could step straight in. In Mindscapes Tarot, the cards feel like small paintings: softly toned, hand-drawn in oil pastel, with a classical landscape mood that is both dreamy and precise. Each card is a window outward, and through that window also a look inward.

This tarot deck includes 80 cards and an accompanying book of 208 pages, is in English, and is published by Hay House LLC.

Why choose these cards?

Mindscapes Tarot reimagines tarot as a journey through places: woods, coasts, mountain passes, and streets that speak without explaining themselves. John A. Rice draws inspiration from psychology, mythology, and color theory, using those layers as the foundation for the symbolism in the artwork. The cards are made to let your attention rest on atmosphere, color, and direction, so you can read from a scene rather than from fixed icons.

The Minor Arcana uses different names for the four suits: Branches for Wands, Tides for Cups, Spires for Swords, and Stones for Pentacles. From Ace through Ten, you return to the same place, seen through seasons and years, in times of plenty and in times of lack. That creates a continuous “panorama line” within each suit that you can follow as a story in a spread. The deck began as a majors-only project and, after a 2022 Kickstarter, was developed into the full 80 cards.

About the creator

John A. Rice is an actor, writer, and visual artist who works primarily in oil pastel, a medium you rarely see taking the lead in tarot. He creates landscapes with clear, brush-like movement built from pastel, which keeps the cards feeling light and childlike without becoming simplistic. From his own background as a tarot reader, he shaped Mindscapes Tarot as a set of worlds you can walk through with a question in hand.

He runs J.A.R. Studio, NYC from his workspace in Astoria, New York, and his work has sold in more than 35 countries. In his own words, his mission is to help people rediscover their own mystique and see themselves as the hero of their own story, with art that invites introspection and creativity.

Who is this product suitable for?

This deck reads comfortably if you like starting from an image and putting words to it: what is the weather in the card, where is the horizon, what moves, what holds steady. Because the Minor Arcana returns to the same landscapes, you can view a situation as a timeline, like visiting the same place repeatedly and noticing something different each time. The accompanying book supports that with interpretations that readers describe as thoughtful and inviting.

If you prefer very traditional tarot imagery that stays close to classic iconography, a classic deck can feel more straightforward. And if you’re sensitive to materials, it helps to know feedback on the card stock is mixed: some people like how the case feels, while others experience the cards as a bit stiff.

Usage tips

Lay three cards: Window In (what’s happening within), Window Out (what the outer world is asking), Bridge (what helps connect the two).
