Mindscapes Tarot reimagines tarot as a journey through places: woods, coasts, mountain passes, and streets that speak without explaining themselves. John A. Rice draws inspiration from psychology, mythology, and color theory, using those layers as the foundation for the symbolism in the artwork. The cards are made to let your attention rest on atmosphere, color, and direction, so you can read from a scene rather than from fixed icons.
The Minor Arcana uses different names for the four suits: Branches for Wands, Tides for Cups, Spires for Swords, and Stones for Pentacles. From Ace through Ten, you return to the same place, seen through seasons and years, in times of plenty and in times of lack. That creates a continuous “panorama line” within each suit that you can follow as a story in a spread. The deck began as a majors-only project and, after a 2022 Kickstarter, was developed into the full 80 cards.
John A. Rice is an actor, writer, and visual artist who works primarily in oil pastel, a medium you rarely see taking the lead in tarot. He creates landscapes with clear, brush-like movement built from pastel, which keeps the cards feeling light and childlike without becoming simplistic. From his own background as a tarot reader, he shaped Mindscapes Tarot as a set of worlds you can walk through with a question in hand.
He runs J.A.R. Studio, NYC from his workspace in Astoria, New York, and his work has sold in more than 35 countries. In his own words, his mission is to help people rediscover their own mystique and see themselves as the hero of their own story, with art that invites introspection and creativity.
