Tarot del Toro - classic tarot structure, Del Toro's gothic world
This deck starts with an unusual collaboration. Guillermo del Toro personally approached Spanish illustrator Tomás Hijo and gave him full artistic freedom to translate his film universe into tarot. Hijo is not a commercial illustrator. He is a professor at the University of Salamanca, specialising in myths and legends, and Del Toro has been collecting his work for years.
The result follows the classic Rider-Waite-Smith structure closely, but looks nothing like it. Thick lines, muted earth tones, gold yellow and deep red: Hijo works in a woodcut and linocut tradition, and the style fits the gothic atmosphere of the films directly.
What you see on the cards
The Major Arcana are populated with characters from Del Toro's films. The Magician is Del Toro himself, seated at his worktable. The Faun from Pan's Labyrinth takes a central role as guide. Creatures from The Shape of Water, Hellboy, Crimson Peak and The Devil's Backbone appear across the deck at key positions.
The Minor Arcana follow the four classical elements, but stay inside the world of the films. Cups carry emotion and longing, with creatures from the deep. Swords picture conflict and mental struggle. Wands hold passion and creation. Pentacles point to relics and physical possessions. The structure is standard; the imagery is not.
Atmosphere and use
Readers on forums including Reddit describe this deck as particularly well suited to shadow work: introspective readings that turn attention toward what is uncomfortable or hidden. The focus on monsters, darkness and the harder sides of human experience supports that. This is not a light or cheerful deck.
The 88-page guidebook includes meanings for each card and examples of basic spreads. The matte finish makes the cards easy to handle and shuffle.
Use this deck for questions about creativity or personal shadow sides. Let the images tell a story rather than following meanings by rote. Hijo's illustrations are layered enough to carry more than one reading.
About Tomás Hijo
Tomás Hijo is a Spanish illustrator and graphic artist, and a professor at the University of Salamanca. His woodcut and linocut technique gives his work a handcrafted, classical quality. His illustrations are held in the private collections of both Guillermo del Toro and comic artist Mike Mignola.
Del Toro approached Hijo directly for this project and gave him complete artistic control. That shows in the cards. This is not a licensed product that recycles film stills. It is Hijo's own interpretation of a shared visual world.

Questions we often get
Do I need to know Del Toro's films to use this deck?
No. The deck follows the classic Rider-Waite-Smith structure and the guidebook explains the meaning of each card. Knowing the films adds another layer, but it is not a requirement for reading the cards.
How does this compare to a standard RWS deck?
The structure is the same: 78 cards, identical Major and Minor Arcana divisions. What differs is the imagery. Hijo's illustrations are darker, rougher and heavier in atmosphere than classic RWS artwork. If you are used to bright, colourful decks, the difference is immediately noticeable.
