A.E. Waite Tarot Deluxe Premium Edition - pocket format with historic card backs
The Rider-Waite tarot has been the standard since 1909. This pocket edition brings it back in a format you can take anywhere, without losing legibility or detail.
The colours have been reapplied, brighter than in many older editions, but without altering the symbolism. The back of the cards is a reproduction of the very first edition, a detail you will not find elsewhere.
What you see on the cards
The images are those of Pamela Colman Smith, drawn in 1909. All 78 cards have a fully developed scene, including the Minor Arcana. That is what set this deck apart from earlier tarot sets at the time.
The colours in this edition are brighter than in some classic printings. The yellow skies and blue waters stand out immediately. This makes the symbolism sharper, but may take some getting used to if you are familiar with the more muted tones of older editions.
Size and material
The cards measure 57 x 89 mm, considerably smaller than standard tarot cards. They are sturdy and have a matte finish. The small format makes them easy to shuffle with one hand.
The guidebook runs 96 pages and is written by Rachel Pollack and Johannes Fiebig. Pollack is one of the most respected tarot authors of recent decades. The text does not offer basic instructions, but does provide thorough card meanings and context about the symbolism.
Draw a card in the morning and slip it into your phone case or wallet. The format makes it easy to keep it with you.
Who this deck works for
This is a classic Rider-Waite deck, published by U.S. Games Systems. If you are looking for a small version of the standard, this is that version. Suitable for those who already know the Rider-Waite system and want a compact deck for travel.
The format is not for everyone. If you prefer large cards to work with, choose a standard size. If compact is an advantage, this edition offers plenty of detail on a small surface.
About Arthur Edward Waite and Pamela Colman Smith
Arthur Edward Waite was a mystic and member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. He designed the system behind this deck in 1909. Pamela Colman Smith drew the cards under his direction. Her work was barely acknowledged at the time, but she is now as well known as Waite himself.
Smith introduced full scenes on all 56 cards of the Minor Arcana, where earlier decks showed only symbols. This made the deck more accessible and more visual.

Questions we often get
Is this an official edition of the Rider-Waite deck?
Yes. U.S. Games Systems is the authorised publisher of this deck. This edition is an original and complete reproduction.
Are the cards not too small to read properly?
The print quality is high and all details remain visible. The format is an advantage for those who want to take the deck with them, but may be less comfortable for large spreads on a table.
