Tarot Vintage A.E. Waite Deck - the classic with muted colours
The Rider-Waite system is the most widely used tarot system in the world. This vintage edition takes that same structure and symbolism, but gives the cards a weathered, nostalgic finish. The colours are softer than in the standard edition, the background has a linen texture.
The result is a deck that is visually calmer. Where the original Rider-Waite uses bright primary colours, this edition opts for a muted palette that recalls old printed works.
What is different about this edition
The symbolism is identical to the original Rider-Waite deck from 1909. The Fool still walks toward the cliff edge, the Hanged Man hangs upside down from the same tree, and the Ace of Cups still shows the hand emerging from the cloud.
What has changed is the treatment. The cards have been digitally adjusted to give an aged impression. The backgrounds have simulated wear, the colours are less bright. It looks as though the deck has been in use for generations.
The cards have a linen texture. This is a light waffle structure in the card stock that prevents the cards from sticking together during shuffling. It is a practical detail that makes a difference in daily use.
How this deck compares to other Rider-Waite editions
The Rider-Waite exists in dozens of editions. Some are faithful to the original colours, others are recoloured or redrawn. This vintage edition belongs to the category that retains the symbolism but adjusts the execution.
It is not a reproduction in the strict sense. It is a deliberate reworking that emphasises atmosphere rather than colour contrast. This makes it suitable for those who want to use the Rider-Waite structure but have no need for the bright colours of the original.
If you are used to the standard Rider-Waite and find the colours distracting during readings, this edition offers more calm.
About Arthur Edward Waite and Pamela Colman Smith
Arthur Edward Waite was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and designed a tarot deck in 1909 with a clear esoteric structure. He worked with artist Pamela Colman Smith, who drew the images.
Smith introduced an important difference: she gave the minor arcana full scenes rather than just symbols. This made the deck more accessible for intuitive reading. Her work became the most copied tarot design ever.
This vintage edition is published by Lo Scarabeo and includes a guidebook by Sasha Graham, tarot author and presenter.

Questions we often get
What exactly does 'vintage' mean for this deck?
The cards have been digitally processed to look older. The colours have been softened and the backgrounds have simulated wear. It is not an old deck, but a new edition designed to look like an antique copy.
Can I use any tarot book with this deck?
Yes. Because this deck follows standard Rider-Waite symbolism, almost all modern tarot books work with it. Most tarot literature is based on this system.
