Loong's Dream Tarot - Chinese dragon mythology in RWS structure
Some tarot cards are tools you pick up and use. This deck is that too, but it asks for a pause first. The Loong's Dream Tarot is part of the Vermilion Collection and brings the Chinese dragon, the Loong, into the familiar structure of the Rider-Waite-Smith system.
The deck was designed by Sha 'Lisa' Li and illustrated by Zhong Zhen Jie. Where the Vermilion Collection often uses softer tones, Li and Zhen Jie chose a heavier palette here: deep gold, black, and red. That gives these cards a presence most tarot cards do not have.
What you see on the cards
The figures are not ordinary people. They carry horns, scales, and tails, a visual language that deliberately blurs the boundary between human and dragon. The style combines traditional Chinese brushwork with digital finishing, making the cards feel both old and precise.
Despite that distinctive imagery, the symbolism stays recognisable for anyone familiar with RWS. The scenes, positions, and figures follow the classic structure, so you can read the cards without learning an entirely new symbolic language.
How this deck feels in your hands
The cards are printed on 350 to 400 gsm card stock with gold gilded edges. Closed, the deck feels like a single solid block. That is not an exaggeration: the weight and finish are noticeably different from a standard tarot set.
The box is a two-piece base-and-lid design with a silky coating. The dragon design on the lid has a tactile raised surface from the hot gold stamping. Cards with gilded edges can stick slightly at first. That clears up after a few thorough shuffles.
Shuffle the cards several times before your first reading. Gilded edges need a little use before they move freely.
About Sha 'Lisa' Li and Zhong Zhen Jie
Sha 'Lisa' Li is the driving force behind the Vermilion Collection. In this deck she works alongside illustrator Zhong Zhen Jie. Where her other projects tend toward tenderness and softer forms, this one places the strength and gravity of the dragon at the centre.
The result is a deck that feels heavier and richer than most tarot cards, physically and visually.
